Yard Work Can Be Fun

Erick and I were out working in the yard this morning and stopped to have some fun with Mollie. Here she is doing her favorite summertime activity, playing with the hose.

Then, we took the ferns down so that Erick could finish power washing the deck and we discovered a bird’s nest with eggs in one of the ferns. I don’t know why, but stuff like that makes me happy. I don’t know what kind of bird it is – a robin maybe? The eggs look a little blue.

  1. That is a priceless video of Mollie. I hope you made a few copies. My Mom’s miniature schnauzer used to be a riot when he played with his stuffed animals and squeaky toys. Now he has developed cataracts and has seizures every once in a while. Oh to have videoed him in his prime… I love stuff like this.

  2. Cool eggs. I wonder what kind the dark speckled one is. Maybe a “parasite” bird of some kind. There are some birds that lay a single egg in the nests of other birds and let these “foster parents” rear their babies for them. By the way, the more plants and structure features you add to your yard, the more birds you will have making homes there. My Mom’s courtyard always has tons of song birds flitting around, even in winter! I have seen a steady increase in my yard as well as my plantings and vegetable gardens have grown. This morning I saw a blue jay hopping between and under my broccoli plants picking off bugs and caterpillars as he went! I also had lots of birds and squirrels on my giant sunflowers two summers ago. Next on my list of attractees: goldfinches and hummingbirds! Neat stuff!
